I've never seen this behavior before, and I know many people (including
myself) who used gcc 2.5.8 under sunos 4.1.3. Can anyone help?

Hi,
I've installed TeX & LaTeX (Sun4 OS4.1.3) by following the instructions in:
ftp://ftp.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/systems/web2c/FTP.nwc
I've come across some problems. Using 'latex filename' produces a 'dvi' file
which does not show correctly using 'xdvi'. It misses every second
word on 'xdvi' output. 'dvitype' gives the following output:
-------
...
...

Font 15: cmbx12 scaled -2147483648---beware: design sizes do not agree!

---loaded at size 943718 DVI units
(this font is magnified -2147483648%)

221: arithmetic overflow! parameter changed from -2147265195 to -2736133

Could you please advice on what has gone wrong with the installtion.
I am using GNU 'make-3.69' & 'gcc 2.5.8'
In directory /vol/scratch/ccusrsp/tex/web2c-6.1:
configure --prefix=/vol/scratch/ccusrsp/tex \
--x-includes=/vol/PACK/X11R5/include \
--x-libraries=/vol/PACK/X11R5/lib
make
make install
make distclean

I'll appreciate your help, I must have spent a month or so on this.
